The beauty of Mocktails is they can be anything you want them to be from the most fabulous to the simplest of concoctions. If you want to place orange juice in a decorative glass and garnish it with an orange twist and call it a Mocktail, by all means, do so. Technically I suppose, Mocktails fall into the category of non-alcoholic versions of their cocktail cousins we readily know from the bar scene. Get to the nitty-gritty of it and one might contend a Screwdriver is basically a doctored up ‘Mocktail’ since the vodka does nothing for the taste with its virtually tasteless appeal. There are exceptions to that rule of course. The same applies to the ever popular ordered cocktail of generic vodka cranberry with the occasional squeeze of lime. Again the vodka adds nothing to the flavor. Take it away and basically all that remains is an ordinary Mocktail.

White Russian Spirit – created by The Intoxicologist - photo property of The IntoxicologistVodka based cocktails create the ideal situation for Mocktail exploration. Take the vodka out of the picture and virtually all that remains is liqueur and non alcoholic mixers. Liqueurs can often be replaced with syrup flavoring found on the coffee aisle or with fruit juices. An excellent place to start is with the popular classic White Russian. The White Russian is a favorite among many for its creamy nature and rich coffee with hints of chocolate undertone.

1-1/2 ounce Half & Half
1-1/2 ounce Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino
1/2 Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Syrup

Build over ice in an Old Fashioned glass.

There are variations in flavor to explore with the White Russian base. With the multitude of flavored syrups on the market there is bound to be a particular flavor that floats your boat more so than others. Remember many of the flavored syrups are available in sugar-free if that is your preference. Hershey’s syrups are also available in sugar free. Don’t be afraid to play around with your favorite flavors until you arrive at what hits the spot.

1/2 ounce DaVinci Raspberry Syrup
