Prohibition Era Depression Era cocktails in times of Recession have become prominent in quite a few areas of the country. Take The Edison in Downtown Los Angeles for instance; living history according to them. One look at the menu and it appears to be living history. The menu takes one back, but the prices keep moving forward. The Edison cocktails build on the ingenuity of bartenders from the past yet launch one deep into cocktail couture of the here and now. With premium spirits, select mixed bitters and exclusive mixers available only to The Edison these Depression Era cocktails in time of Recession are sure to please the palate while taking one back to a time when life was truly rougher than we actually feel the crunch now. 
 
While The Edison libation menu is innovative, it is anything but basic cocktails from times of great need. In keeping with the feel of classic or Recession feel cocktails it makes sense to turn toward those that fit the bill of fewer ingredients, fundamental characteristics necessary to fulfill the need of the drink and a result that qualifies as satisfying. 
 
Fitty Fitty using Plymouth Gin - photo property of The IntoxicologistAccording to Esquire drinks correspondent and distinguished writer David Wondrich (he’s a Beard Award winner, too) Pegu Club’s Fitty Fitty is the Perfect Martini. The Fitty Fitty features equal parts vermouth and gin with a few dashes of orange bitters, stirred rather than shaken. Granted, the Pegu Club uses a brand other than the one I used for experimentation purposes, but it is the time of Recession cocktails. Plymouth Gin worked just fine in this particular martini. Give it a whirl and see what you think.
 
The Fitty-Fitty
1-1/2 ounces Gin
1-1/2 ounces Dry Vermouth
A few dashes of orange bitters
 
Stir with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.
 
Another cocktail made to order for the times; Manhattan. The Manhattan may be made to order according to taste by bourbon or whiskey brand and sweetness level to the degree of sweet vermouth placed in the cocktail. This is also a three ingredient cocktail with the addition of garnish if one chooses to add in the cherry.

1-3/4 ounce Jim Beam Bourbon
3/4 ounce Sweet Vermouth
Dash Bitters
Cherry Garnish
 
Build over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with cherry. Notation: For something really intriguing try the VeeV in Fashion. This is The Intoxicologist version of the Classic Old Fashioned using Jim Beam Bourbon and VeeV Acai Spirit.
 
The Bacardi Cocktail goes back a long way in the history of cocktails due to litigation, but during the summer time heat nothing quenches one’s thirst like the tart lime of a rum Daiquiri. If the Bacardi Cocktail is your choice for drinks, just add in a dash or splash of grenadine to the top of this Bacardi Daiquiri and you’re good to go.

3 parts Bacardi Rum
1 part Lime Juice
1/2 teaspoon Sugar
 
Mix all the ingredients in a shaker with ice.  Frappe and serve strained on the rocks or mix all ingredients in a blender and serve in a chilled cocktail glass.
 
·         So, you like it dirty?
·         Ask for Bacardi by name
