Sicilian Triangle - photo property of The IntoxicologistSummer makes anytime celebration time. When the weather heats up it is time to kick back and enjoy cool libations. Take advantage of the luscious summer fruits this season and treat yourself to cocktails that add the fresh taste of the season and are lower in alcohol content. Berries and fresh juices are all the rage at bars across the nation for their delectable flavor and aesthetic appearance.

Try mixing fruits from the season with Averna Amaro, the Italian aperitif staple distilled from flowers, herbs, dried fruit, spices and licorice. The natural ingredients of Averna make this aperitif a delicious addition to summertime cocktails! With an alcohol content of 32% (others usually come in at 40%), cocktails created with Averna make a healthier alternative (when consumed in moderation of course).

Try these pleasurable Averna favorites for your next relaxing afternoon poolside or evening of entertaining.

Vertigo – created by Duggan McDonnell
1/2 ounce lemon juice
Ginger ale
2 ounces Averna

Stir lemon juice and ginger ale over ice in a highball glass. Float Averna and garnish with a lime wedge. Intoxicologist Note: The Vertigo is a refreshing cocktail that goes long. Be sure to stir this one to enjoy it start to finish. Ginger ale is light enough to allow the Averna all the glory in this particular cocktail while the lemon gives it just the splash it needs for summery feel.

Midnight Smash - ala Averna
6 blackberries
Juice of 1 meyer lemon, hand-squeezed
1 ounce Averna
1 ounce orange-flavored vodka
2 ounces ginger beer

Muddle blackberries in a shaker, add the juice of 1 meyer lemon, Averna, and orange-flavored vodka and shake vigorously over ice. Strain over ice in a highball glass and add ginger beer. Garnish with an orange wheel.

Sicilian Triangle – ala Averna
2 ounces Averna
1 ounce white rum
1 ounce pomegranate juice
1/2 ounce orange juice
1/2 ounce lemon juice
Splash of pineapple juice

Combine all ingredients and shake vigorously over ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge. Intoxicologist Note: Pineapple is the primary flavor at first, but given a moment to mingle the entire cocktail begins to linger on the palate. Averna displays its true character throughout this tropical feel cocktail, leaving a well rounded drink to enjoy in true Sicilian style.
