Oronoco Rum Bottle - Celebrating Brazil - photo property of The IntoxicologistOronoco Rum may possibly have one of the top ten liquor bottles ever. As I say top ten, the list is not fully assembled. St-Germain Liqueur remains steadfast on the list with its curvaceous sex appeal that stands solid above the rest. But this Oronoco Rum catches the eye whether seen in photos, on the internet, but especially in person. It gets fondled by people at first sight when they walk into a room. Maybe it is the leather map that encases the bottle, the paper with hand scrawled Old World appearance just above the map or the substantial lid that seals the sturdy top. Whatever it is, Oronoco Rum took the time to seal the deal on this seriously splendid spirit. Upon opening the bottle, the spirit inside never disappoints.

Oronoco has excellent viscosity. Tears take forever to form and fall. The aroma is deep butterscotch, smooth, delightful, buttery, toffee-like. This aroma deceives one into thinking Oronoco will be sweet rum. It is not. Oronoco is merely lightly sweet, gentle in fact, excellent for sipping. There is lightness as it rolls across the tongue rather than overwhelming thickness in the mouthfeel.

While there are a few cocktail recipes published for Oronoco , it is best as either a single cup sipper or autumn to winter type rum to play with in cocktails. The base is warm and inviting, soothing rather than frolicking. There is excellent depth of character here. Medium to rich body feel while remaining light overall. Oronoco Rum will definitely be revisited in the next few months in time for holiday planning.

Oronoco Rum currently does not have a website, but is a brand carried by Diageo with coverage on theBar.com. Oronoco Rum retails for approximately $35 - $40 and may be found online and in some local markets. The photo drink recipe slide show below contains 10 Oronoco Rum drink recipes with links to more recipes with Brazilian spirit.
