Makeshift Margarita – created by The Intoxicologist - photo property of The IntoxicologistMargaritas are the ‘go to’ cocktail of the day no matter the season. With Independence Day celebrations less than a week away, things begin heating up as celebrations begin early and go long. Mocktails are the perfect thirst quencher to carry one through the long day while still keeping with the tone of festive ‘cocktail’. Have the best of both worlds. Mix up Makeshift Margaritas for your celebration or anytime you want a creative little pick me up.

The Makeshift Margarita calls for Homemade Sour in the ingredients listing. Rather than opt for overly sweetened store bought margarita and sour mix with artificial ingredients added, make your own at home. Sour mix is simple to make and the taste is fresher with less acidic burn.

Homemade Sour
1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
1/2 cup Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 cup Fresh Lime Juice

Combine ingredients in a sauce pan over low heat. Bring to a simmer. Remove from heat. Allow to cool. Place in a container with lid. Homemade Sour will keep in the refrigerator for approximately two weeks.

Juice from 1 Lime
1/2 ounce Agave Nectar
1 ounce Homemade Sour
Ginger Ale
Salt for Rim
Lime Wedge for Garnish

Rub lime wedge around the rim of margarita glass or decorative cocktail glass. Dip in salt to rim. Fill two thirds full with ice. Combine juice of one lime, agave nectar and homemade sour in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to mix thoroughly.   Strain into margarita glass. Top off with ginger ale. Garnish with lime wedge.

Mocktails truly are an expression of creativity. Dress up tea, fruit juices and sparkling waters. The goal is to have a pleasurable thirst quenching good time!
