Mocktail Monday: Faking your next Sex on the Beach

The pools are open and it is time to dip our toes in the water for the first splash of summer sun with bikinis, sandpit volleyball and cocktails that scream excitement. There is no better cocktail to bring the thrill of the beach inland than Sex on the Beach. It is delicious, lightly sweet and an unexpected play of pineapple with peach liqueur that refreshes and delights in a frothy, fruity sort of way. It just blares bikini, sunshine and summer enthusiasm.
Sex on the Beach is a classic cocktail difficult to pinpoint its origin. Even so there was a time when this pink hued number made it into the top ten listing in the hottest bars around the nation due to the name alone. Little wonder why. Sex on the Beach has taken on a life of its own with variations as ‘creative’ as the imagination will roam; Creamy Sex on the Beach, Oral Sex on the Beach, Quick Sex on the Beach, Sex on the Brain, Sex on the Pool Table and Sex with the Bartender. All may be found in any number of cocktail books or through internet searches.
However, no matter how much anyone loves Sex on the Beach, it is impossible to enjoy this concoction all day long. For that reason it is important to learn how to fake your way through Sex on the Beach. In the case of the fake, bigger is better. You’ll be taking this one away from the bar, so this mocktail is built for keeping your thirst quenched for a good long while. Whenever possible fresh fruit juices make the difference between ho hum and “Wow!” Garnishing is the finishing touch for accessorizing and adding that extra juicy completion to the ordinary. If fresh fruit is unavailable, dress your cocktail up with a frilly straw to make it feel like you’ve gone the extra mile.
Faux Sex on the Beach – created by The Intoxicologist
3 ounces Pineapple juice
2 ounces Cranberry juice
1/4 ounce Raspberry syrup (found on the coffee aisle)
2 ounces Apricot nectar
Club Soda
Pour all ingredients except club soda into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for fifteen seconds. Pour into a large glass with ice. Top off with club soda. Garnish with a skewer of fresh pineapple chunks & maraschino cherries. Intoxicologist Note: Heavy on the sweet, but long on flavor, Faux Sex on the Beach is anything but mocking of its predecessor. The character of the cocktail lingers without exactly replicating Sex on the Beach. The sweet factor can be regulated by thinning the cocktail more with club soda. Just use a larger glass or container for your Faux Sex on the Beach and add more club soda. This cocktail may also be split between glasses and shared for two to enjoy.

The key to creating fabulous Sex on the Beach is the right ratio of quality ingredients. Fresh fruit juice has already been mentioned.
Good quality vodka is also essential. Traditional Sex on the Beach does not call for the use of Chambord, but this splash of flavor adds wonderful layering to the cocktail. Be sure to shake this cocktail over ice and then strain rather than building over ice so you don’t miss out on the full frothy effect.
