Twelve straight Premier League clean sheets. A two-point lead with a game in hand. A slipping Chelsea team that many saw as the title favorite at the beginning of the season.
Everything seems to be shaping up for Manchester United as the season presses onward, and they must be considered the favorite right now. If United was to suffer a fatal slip, many thought it would come during the middle of the year when they traveled to Japan for the Club World Cup. With so many games and so much travel, those couple of weeks figured to be a prime opportunity for the challengers to make their move.
But instead United defied the odds and kept posting their clean sheets – even without central defender Rio Ferdinand for some of the time. And now the Reds find themselves in prime position at the top of the table, having already visited Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
And when they finally got one of the big boys at Old Trafford (Chelsea), United was able to pick up the full three points – which has eluded their rivals from Stamford Bridge in the elite matchups this season.
With Cristiano Ronaldo still trying to find last season’s form, United sits in quite the enviable position at the moment. Chelsea seem long-shots after the loss to Liverpool, and Arsenal’s pickup of Arshavin will hardly help the defensive issues that have plagued them at times. While the final half of the year will no doubt bring some surprises, it’s not hard to imagine a United-Liverpool showdown in the final weeks, with a pivotal March 14 matchup at Old Trafford that could be decisive.
