It’s hard to feel bad for Chelsea (or any megaclub in today’s day and age, for that matter), but you can’t deny they’ve had a rough go of it during the last couple weeks.
First they watched in shock as Robinho was whisked away from them at the last minute – killing their hopes of adding a lethal element up front as they start their Premier League campaign. And now they have to deal with Michael Essien being out for potentially five and a half months because of an operation on his knee after playing in a World Cup qualifier.
That will make Saturday’s date with Manchester City a tough one, although this Soccernet article says it’s possible that Didier Drogba could return from his knee injury against City, even if it isn’t for the full game. That could be a welcome boost for the Blues, who would benefit greatly from a productive Drogba. When his head is on straight, the Ivory Coast striker is always dangerous and gives Chelsea more options up front.

--Here’s a nice piece by David Conn on Liverpool’s stadium woes and what the consequences could be. Conn is always knowledgeable about the big picture, and this piece is no different.
--Keeping on the news over at Anfield, Steven Gerrard doesn’t think he’s going to be ready for Manchester United on Saturday at home. With Fernando Torres already hurt, this could be a tough blow. That said, this article says Rafa Benitez is holding out hope for both players, and no one would be shocked to see the big-time players show up at gametime for this clash of the EPL’s elite.
