While Chelsea was busy stumbling its way to a 1-1 tie against Tottenham on Sunday, Manchester City was reaping the rewards of a former Chelsea player that didn’t fit into the Blues’ plans.
The flash of light known as Shaun Wright-Phillips returned to Manchester City in braceful style with two second half goals that gave his squad a convincing 3-0 win against Sunderland.
A player with his pace is always going to be dangerous, and City now sits in a nice position with six points after their three games. Surprisingly, not one team claimed all nine points from their first three games, and Manchester United will have a chance to pull level again thanks to the slip-up from Liverpool and Chelsea.
Liverpool predictably couldn’t sustain its escape act and failed to score without Steven Gerrard on the pitch in a nil-nil draw against Aston Villa. More alarmingly, Fernando Torres suffered a hurt hamstring according to this Guardian article, it could take him out past their next game – a Sept. 13 matchup with United in the season’s first real high-profile clash. Chelsea will also be taking on City on that day, and Wright-Phillips will have a chance to show the Blues exactly what they gave up.
Other developments in the day have seen Real Madrid upset about Chelsea’s tactics in going after Robinho. Blah, blah, blah, like we haven’t heard that before (from Man United during the Ronaldo saga). However if Chelsea did indeed start selling his jersey on their Web site, that’s pretty hilarious.
Concerning Berbatov, Robinho and Co., we’ll soon see what all this talk comes to as the window closes.
