An exciting weekend of football awaits us, both in the U.S. and abroad. We’ll highlight the six of the top matches over the next three days.
Friday, 2:45 ET Manchester United vs. FC Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Super Cup – Sir Alex has said he’ll be playing a strong squad in this one, and there’s no reason not to with no more Premier League action until Sept. 13. This should be a fun one, and Fox Soccer Channel is carrying it.
Saturday, 12:30 ET, Newcastle at Arsenal, TV: FSC – Newcastle has looked solid in claiming their four points, including an opening-day draw at Old Trafford. Now they’ll march into Emirates and try to keep the Gunners heading downward after the 1-0 loss to Fulham last week. But Cesc Fabregas is back, so this should be a new Arsenal team.
Sunday, 8:30 a.m. ET, Tottenham at Chelsea – This one will be interesting if the Robinho transfer goes through. If not, it will likely be notable for Tottenham having no points after three games played.
Sunday, 11 a.m. ET, Liverpool at Aston Villa, TV: FSC – Liverpool has looked shaky thus far, and this will serve as a great test for Rafa’s bunch with no Steven Gerrard to save the day.
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, New York at D.C. United, TV: FSC –Tied for fourth in the East, these two will go head-to-head and try to gain a little separation. D.C. will be looking for a small bit of revenge, as their last matchup on August 10 in NY ended with a 4-1 loss.
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, Los Angeles at New England – The Galaxy are starting to run out of opportunities, and they haven’t won a regular season MLS game since June 14. Bruce Arena will have David Beckham and Landon Donovan at his disposal now that international play has a pause, and even though the West is packed, they need to start moving.
