Here we have it -- this season's Champions League draw for the group stages. Take a look.
Group A (Chelsea, AS Roma, Bordeaux, CFR 1907 Cluj)
Group B (Internazionale, Werder Bremen, Panathinaikos, Anorthosis Famagusta)
Group C (FC Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, FC Basel, Shakhtar Donetsk)
Group D (Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, Marseille, Atletico Madrid)
Group E (Manchester United, Villarreal, Celtic, Aalborg BK)
Group F (Olympique Lyonnais, Bayern Munich, Steaua Bucharest, Fiorentina)
Group G (Arsenal, FC Porto, Fenerbahce, Dynamo Kiev)
Group H (Real Madrid, Juventus, Zenit St. Petersburg, BATE Borisov)
At first glance, Group H could be entertaining with Madrid, Juventus and Zenit St. Petersburg. This competition hasn’t be Madrid’s strong point the last couple years, and they certainly don’t have an easy group by any means.
It appears Bayern should not have trouble advancing out of Group F, altough they haven't looked strong so far this season. Looking at the English squads, Manchester United probably got the worst draw with Villarreal as the second best team in Group E and Celtic as well, while Aalborg BK should act as the punching bag. That said, it appears it would be a surprise/disappointment if any of the EPL four didn’t make it out given their recent strong history in the competition.
Villarreal and Porto could some troublesome No. 2’s if they indeed enter the knockout stages in that position.
Which matchups intrigue you in this opening stage, and which groups do you think could offer some surprises? Do you think any of the top squads won’t make it out?
