Apparently, a lot can depend on your point of view. I arrived home from work this evening to a rather humorous contrast in headlines. First, I glanced at ESPN Soccernet to see what had happened in the previous couple of hours. Low and behold, I find myself staring at the main front package headline with a huge picture of Nemanja Vidic, Manchester Uniteds’s accomplished defender, that says: “Vidic ‘wants Spain move.’”
Somewhat shocked, I read on to find that he does not like the weather according to a recent interview. He also doesn’t like the culture, saying it’s easier to adapt to Russia than England. Thinking to myself, ‘Wow, that development is a little shocking,’ I swing on over to The Guardian’s home page to see what they have on the matter.
Let’s just say they have a slightly different take than Soccernet. On the Guardian page, the story is buried in the list of links at the bottom. The headline reads: “Rain is making Vidic feel under the weather.”
Well, that is a SLIGHT difference in opinion. The Guardian article points to his comment that the England weather is not ideal and says in the last paragraph of the article that he would like to try out Spain eventually in the future.
There are certainly different ways to spin things. The Guardian seems a bit more plausible, although it’s not unheard of for a Manchester player to desire to leave for Spain (hmmm, I’m thinking of one with gelled hair, wears No. 7….). That said, as long as this United team has No. 7 in its uniform, it would be strange to think anyone would want to leave right now with the prospect of more European hardware in the immediate future.
Oh, and by the way, here’s another little article from Soccernet saying that Vidic suggests that Andrei Arshavin should go from Russia to play in England. Hmm, one of these things is not like the other….
What do you think, will Vidic go in the near future? How vital has he been to United’s success?
-- On to other news, The Guardian is reporting that Chelsea should be wrapping up Robinho within the next 24 hours for 28.6 million pounds. Well done by the Blues to keep it under 30 million….that’s been tough for the club in recent years. Money aside though, this should be a fun addition to the club up front and make Chelsea a bit more entertaining to watch.
What do you think, is the deal really that close after so many false alarms so far?
-- I also see that Rafa Benitez wants improvement from his squad. While it seems that he is trying to inspire them for the upcoming Champions League qualifying round, you would have to agree. After Liverpool has escaped with six points in the EPL, they can’t count on living that close to the edge all season long. And it would be much more fun to see Rafa’s squad up pushing the Top 3 this season and making it a more interesting affair instead of another “What happened?” year at Anfield.
-- Finally, Michael Owen managed a game-winner for Newcastle in the Carling Cup. After saving their game over the weekend, too, Kevin Keegan might want to think about finalizing that contract right about NOW. Will Newcastle be able to keep him, or will he want to go on to one of the bigger clubs?
Now for the poll question. I had avoided Liverpool so far on purpose, but now the moment finally seems right since they sit atop the table with the Blues after two games. A team which seems to have so much talent and constantly showcases those skills in the Champions League against Europe’s best cannot for the life of them sustain it for a full EPL season. Have at it.
And don’t be shy, post on the comments. The discussion section of this site should be the best part. I’ll try to respond to anyone who wants to have a say on these topics -- let’s get it rolling.
