For those MLS fans out there, this second half of the season is gonna be fun. The parity is just ridiculous right now. Nine points separates first and last in the East, and that gap is just eight in the West. Heck, after a big 4-0 win on Saturday against New England, who’s to say the San Jose Earthquakes can’t make a run at the playoffs? These next few weeks should see the tables space out a little so that we can identify the main storylines coming into the season’s final months before the playoffs. Let’s begin with a couple previews for tomorrow’s games.
D.C. United vs. New England, 7:30 p.m. ET
United is looking to build upon their impressive 1-0 win on the road at Chicago against a Brian McBride-reinforced Fire squad. This came after a 4-1 league thrashing at the hands of New York just a week ago. The question now is if they can build on that by getting a result on the road against the Revolution. Sitting in a tie for fourth place with the Red Bulls, a draw on the road would be fine, but picking up three more points would be huge as they try to get rolling in this second half of the season.
The Revolution will be missing Gabriel Badilla thanks to World Cup qualifying, while D.C. will lose Ivan Guerrero to the same.
These points couldn’t be much harder to get though. The Revolution might have a comfy spot in the standings right now, but they just got thrashed by the Earthquakes (last in the West) by a shocking score of 4-0 this past Saturday. Hard to see D.C. coming back with three – one would be impressive.
Chivas USA vs. Houston, 9 p.m. ET
Chivas USA sits in sixth place in the West, but that is merely six points off of Houston, who sits atop the standings. So a win here would be huge for Chivas as they try to get themselves back up the table. The bummer is this game will be ravaged by the large slate of World Cup qualifying. The absence of Brian Ching and Sacha Kljestan (USA), and Dwayne De Rosario (Canada) will take away much of the star power. But that should work out better for Chivas, who are losing only one.
Check back later today for posts on the EPL, MLS and the England/Czech Republic game.
