The Crew's MLS Cup win, and rumblings in Seattle

For those who tuned in Sunday to check out the MLS Cup Final (unfortunately it wasn’t on over here in Europe), you got to see the Columbus Crew grab their first cup with a decisive 3-1 victory in Carson, Calif., against the New York Red Bulls.
Phew.
With the way the MLS playoffs are set up, it’s not every year that you’re going to see the best team (obviously decided by the regular season) take their momentum into the postseason and claim the big title. But this time the best team did come out on top, thanks in large part to the brilliance of League (and MLS Cup) MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto and his three assists.
For those who didn’t catch the game, go to the MLS website and watch Schelotto’s incredible vision on a delicately-played chip to set up Frankie Hejduk for the clincher in the 82nd minute.
Before we move on to something else, what did you think of the MLS Cup playoffs? Is too much emphasis placed on the Cup? How could the MLS work it so that the regular season means more, but the Cup still draws interest? Or does the regular season mean enough as it is?
Mull those over, and in the meantime here are some MLS events to keep you occupied for the next few days. First, the Houston Dynamo will try to rebound from their playoff loss to New York when they take on Luis Angel Firpo from El Salvador at home in the CONCACAF Champions League tomorrow with a chance to advance out of the group stages with a win.
And Seattle Sounders FC will take part tomorrow in the 10-round expansion draft. Scroll down this page to check out what players are available to them.
Continuing with Seattle news, well-known soccer journalist Ives Galarcep is reporting on his blog that Sigi Schmid, the recently victorious Columbus Crew coach, is (according to sources) close to signing on to coach the new club in Seattle.
We’ll keep an eye out to see if this one pans out.
