As we are starting to near the month of December, here we go with a Top-4 rundown of some soccer (football) holiday gifts, especially if you have a fanatical supporter in the family.

 1) An England home white jersey. I’d love to know the actual reason behind this, but apparently someone ordered WAYYYYYYY too many for the stores (especially Sports Direct stores). The last price I saw was 3.49 (pounds, not dollars). That’s not a joke. These are the official England home shirts at less than five pounds. When I got to London they were more like an even 10, but apparently that wasn’t doing the trick.

2) Next up, how about a scarf. They’re relatively cheap, quality gifts (available on all club websites, EPL or MLS) that work great either as a clothing item or a memorabilia item to hang on a wall. And they’re a gift for a true fan, because over here you’re no one without a scarf.

3) If you’re in the mood, why not a pair of EPL match tickets? HA. Just kidding. You don’t wanna break the bank.

3 for real) Books are always a good idea. Fellow examiner Brian Louie wrote a piece about some of his favorites earlier, and allow me to follow up on that. Bill Buford’s Among the Thugs is a must-read, as is The Miracle of Castel di Sangro by Joe McGinniss. Those two are not only great football books, but just good writing in general (especially the latter). I also just finished Guardian writer Daniel Taylor’s This is the One, about Sir Alex Ferguson. While the book is confined by the access Taylor gets (mainly press conferences), this is an entertaining read and certainly gives you some glimpses into Ferguson’s personality and mind, which is no small achievement.

4) For our last one, football shirts are always a good idea. But here’s the catch. Yes, you might not want to pay the 40 pounds it cost to get the actual official shirt that is worn during matches. HOWEVER, if you look around you can usually find the club’s warm-up shirt – which has the logo and will most likely be worn more as a cool workout item. Plus, it’s usually half the price.

Good luck and happy shopping.
