Date rape is a serious problem, to say the very least. Girls go out, have a few too many, and the next thing they know they're being raped by a total stranger who slipped something into their drink. Here are some tips on common date rape drugs, and also ways to keep yourself safer.

1. Go easy on the drinks. It's easy to lose your head if you've drunk too much, and when you're drunk in public, it's a lot more dangerous than being drunk at your mother's Christmas party. Know your limits and don't overdo it.

2. Do not let anyone buy you a drink unless you are watching at the bar. Commonly a guy who's intent on date rape will go off to a bar, buy a girl a drink, and slip something in it on the way back, counting on the drug taking effect. If someone wants to buy you a drink, don't freak - but accompany them to the bar and watch the drink being made to be certain that nothing besides what belongs in the drink is going in the glass.

A number of drugs are employed to induce various effects. One of these is flunitrazepam, an anticonvulsant and hypnotic drug commonly used to treat insomnia. It is also known to have amnestic effects.

Another drug, ketamine, is primarily an anesthetic drug used to treat animals in veterinary medicine. It can induce hallucinations, high blood pressure, and analgesia in humans. Ketamine is considered to be one of the most common date rape drugs.

Temazepam, another insomnia drug, is also sometimes used, as well as midazolam, another amnestic and anticonvulsant drug.

No matter who you are, it's all about keeping yourself safe - so don't get too drunk, keep an eye on your drinks...but don't forget to have a good time.
