After posting my favorite Northern California lakes yesterday, I began thinking about high gas prices, Staycations, and our unified economic woes. Many of you might be wondering how to enjoy summer by staying close to home. Here is a list of East Bay lakes, within an hour drive of San Francisco.

1. Lake Anza. Jump on in to this family-favored lake, up in the Berkeley Hills. An afternoon here transports you to another era.

2. Lake Temescal. Just past Oakland's Rockridge district, off Hwy 24, this little lake delights swimmers, hikers, joggers and picnikers.

3. Lake Chabot. This locally-favored campsite is a wonderful place to relax in the Oakland hills.

4. Lake Del Valle. Stocked with fish, this Livermore lake feels like the real deal. And you can guarantee some summertime heat with your swim.

Check back for lakes in Marin, the south bay and Wine Country.
