Toothaches can cause so much agony and unbearable throbbing pain for someone that you may want a quick form of relief until you can get to your dentist. A toothache is discomfort or pain with soreness and reddening around a tooth. This pain and discomfort is caused by irritation, swelling, and possible infection. A toothache starts when tooth decay penetrates the pulp chamber or reaches in its close proximity that contains the nerve endings and tiny blood vessels. I recently had toothache pain that turned into a root canal (Endodontic Therapy). In a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

During the toothache pain before my root canal I was searching for natural remedies to help ease my toothche pain until I could see my dentist. There are few preventative measures you can take before you end up with a toothache due to poor dental care of your teeth. You should brush after each meal and before bed time. Floss your teeth gently on a regular basis. Avoid candy and sweets which can cause cavities.

Most toothaches occur at night when you are trying to sleep because of the increased blood pressure towards your head. Keeping your head elevated my help decrease the pressure of a toothache. Most people will try to take over the counter pain killers such as Aleve, Advil or Aspirin. You can also try these natural home remedies to help you alleviate the pain until you can get to your dentist.

Below is a list of some natural remedies which may be effective in helping relieve your toothache pain until you can see a professional for treatment.

  1. Use an Icepack: Ice helps to numb the pain at the nerve endings. Hold the ice around affected area and try to compress it there.
  2. Vanilla extract: Place 2 - 3 drops of vanilla extract on the tooth that is aching to provide instant pain relief.
  3. Fresh peppermint: Take about 5 grams of fresh peppermint and add it in one cup of water and boil it, add half table spoon of salt. Let the water get lukewarm and drink it. This acts as pain killer.
  4. Whiskey: Take a swig of whiskey and hold it over the painful tooth. It acts as an anesthetic to the affected area.
  5. Cloves or Clove oil: Clove oil or cloves is a mild anesthetic. Apply to the painful area to provide instant pain relief from the toothache.
  6. Oil of Oregano: It tastes bad but it is effective and it has natural antibiotic properties.
  7. Garlic: Make a paste of garlic and add some rock salt. Apply on the affected area for toothache relief.
  8. Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is very effective in killing bacteria and alleviating pain. Mix tea tree oil with water or dab on a Q-tip and put directly or painful area.
  9. Lukewarm Salt Water: Gargle with a glassful of water mixed with 1 tsp of salt after each meal and at bedtime.
  10. Wheat Grass Juice: Wheat grass draws out toxins from gums. It is an excellent mouthwash for decaying teeth and it cures toothaches.

The pain of a toothache can range from mild to excruciating pain. The pain can increase by eating and drinking hot and cold foods and liquids. The weather can also worsen the pain of a toothache.

Most tooth decay is from bad dental care and a bad diet of excessive sugary foods such as candy, soft drinks, pastries and other forms of food that contain sugar. Proper dental care is important in maintaining your tooth's health and avoiding cavities, toothaches and other issues that may surface due to improper dental care. Take care of your teeth and they will last you a lifetime.
