"Public health experts are calling for a tax on foods containing wheat and corn products, cane sugar, standard and high fructose corn syrups, and artery-clogging vegetable oils in an attempt to curb the obesity epidemic plaguing North America.

Research has linked the excess consumption of carbohydrate to a higher risk for obesity, certain cancers, diabetes, kidney and heart disease.

To reduce these risks, and reduce the associated health-care costs, a group of public health officials proposes a tax of one per cent per ounce for foods that contain junk carbohydrate.

The group admits that the exact ramifications of the tax would not be known until it is put into place. However, money generated could be used to fund obesity-prevention programs and other public-health initiatives.

"'The science base linking the consumption of excess carbohydrate to the risk of chronic diseases is clear," the group stated in their press release. "Spiraling health care costs and the ever-increasing burden of diseases related to poor diet create an urgent need for solutions, thus justifying government's right to recoup costs.'  In other words, those who eat a healthy low-carb diet are sick unto death of paying for those who stuff their pudgy faces with carbage."

Oh, wouldn't this be wonderful if it really happened...
