Hosts Olivia Newton John and David Foster introduced Olympic champion skater Scott Hamilton who kicked off the show Kaleidoscope with a comical routine. He entered the ice with a walker and pretended to be an old man with the song “Everything old is new again” but soon gave the powerful performance fans expect. It was an incredible comeback after his two time battle with cancer. His performance was followed by Olympic skater and Dancing with the Stars champion Kristie Yamaguchi, She gave an uplifting routine to the Beatles classic song “When I’m 64’.
Next up was Olympic champion Dorothy Hamill who’s hairstyle inspired million’s of little girls to cut their hair . Hamill recently battled breast cancer. Hamill said “Being a ice skater one of the lessons you learn is when you fall down you always gotta get right back up again”. She took to the ice like she had never left it, floating across the ice to “Some Enchanted evening” wearing a midnight blue dress accented with crystals.
Former American Idol contestant David Archuleta sang a touching rendition of “Silent Night”. The song is included in his latest CD release called “Christmas from the Heart”. While he sang Olympic hopeful Ashley Wagner gave a stunning performance showing she has what is takes to go for the gold.
1994 Olympic Champion Nancy Kerrigan performed an elegant routine followed by US Silver medalist and Olympic hopeful Rachael Flatt. Flatt gave a high energy performance to a big band tune, another sign the US team is head for gold in the coming competitions.
Skaters Meryl Davis and Charlie White are currently ranked the number one dance team in the world. They are also the 2009 U.S. and Four Continents Ice Dance Champions. They came together to perform a beautiful routine to the music of the holiday classic “The Nutcracker”. Champion skater Viktr Petrenko gave a hilarious performance with a puppet as his partner. The puppet was strapped to him as “they” skated to Mambo no. 5.
All of this entertainment has a purpose with “Purple Songs Can Fly” project at the Texas cancer Center. The program gives kids the chance to share music with friend and family in the form of their own personal recordings as a “tangible symbol for the hope of healing”. Singer Olivia Newton John and Producer David Foster came together to write and record “ Hope is always here”. Olivia sang their uplifting original song “ Hope is always here”along with the "Purple songs" children, David Foster on piano,while Dorothy Hamill skated. The original song is available on Itunes and amazon.com all proceeds got to the “Purple Songs Can Fly” project.
Kristie Yamaguchi gave another wonderful performance in a ice pink shimmering skaters dress followed by 2008 World Junior Champion Rachael Flatt in another world class performance. In 1992 Olivia Newton John began her cancer battle. In the beginning she was afraid she would not be able to sing anymore, but soon found herself filled with new songs to share.
Olivia : “Look, I here I m a survivor.”
Skater Ashley Wagner came back for a touching interpretive routine with a scarlet red scarf to Miley Cyrus’s inspirational hit song “The Cimb”. Nancy Kerrigan , Meryl Davis and Charlie White skated to “I’ll be home for Christmas” which was sung by Former American Idol Katherine McPhee. Followed by yet another amazing performance by cancer survivor Scott Hamilton, which he highlighted with a signature flip to the song “ Here comes a miracle” .
Hamilton; “Every time my health has been challenged, skating's brought me back.”
The big finale was a “group skate” with the entire cast of skaters on the ice, and singers on stage.
