The economy's still in the doldrums, belts are still a wee bit tight, but as I've said before, for readers, where there's a will, there's a way, yes? Well, poking around again, I've come up with a new batch of interesting freebies for you.
For instance, this sweet find from the folks over at Eos, who in honor of the release (on June 30) of the latest novel from urban fantasy author Vicki Pettersson, are offering a free online read of her very first novel, The Scent of Shadows. You can find that here at the Eos site. They also have up a sneak peek at the aforementioned June 30th release, City of Souls.
This next one was a real treat for me, I recently stumbled across Michael Moorcock’s classic 1971 novel Breakfast in the Ruins posted as a free read over at Revolution SF. Also at Revolution SF, you'll find a novella by the name of The Ghost Warriors, from Moorcock's book Tales from the Texas Woods which seems like, a spaghetti western starring one of his most famous characters. So, at least for Moorcock fans, that’s a treat.
Another free read I found was from science fiction author Jeffrey A. Carver who is offering a copy of his novel Sunborn for download, right now.
And Fantasy author Sean Williams is offering his novel The Crooked Letter for download on his livejournal.
Need more? Of course you do! Well, then, you'll find Fantasy author Mayer Alan Brenner offers an entire out of print (and from what I've very undeservedly so) unusual/comic/ skeptical/weird Fantasy trilogy, Dance of the Gods. This one is a real treat, and seems a shame to have lost to, you know, the changing market. (Though it is still available through Amazon, if you want to purchase a real, albeit used, copy) Somewhat Terry Brooks, somewhat Douglas Adams, it deserves to be read, by everyone who likes a good sciencey fantasy story.
Looking for some up and coming authors, try the "authors and excerpts" section over at Drollerie Press, for a little taste of the works of their talented authors; for example: Angela Cameron’s thriller Nocturne and Sarah Avery’s Greco-Roman Pagan Fantasy (for lack of a better term) Atlantis Cranks Need Not Apply.
Romance authors Stella and Audra Price also offer some freebie reads; over at All Romance.com you can find their short story, The Sleeping, available for free download.
In fact, All Romance offers several short stories for free download, so if you’re looking for something like that, do check out that site; also, Romance publisher Wild Rose Press also offers quite a few free reads.
Bored with reading? There are a few interesting shows online too. The NBC.com has quite a few episodes of the new Sunday night Fantasy offering Merlin online for your viewing pleasure. Also, Hulu has episodes of Dresden Files, a couple episodes of Dollhouse, and Stargate SG-1. And if you're curious about this one, HBO has some clips fromthe hit series True Blood online now.
So, once again, quite a few good things to take a look at, and possibly add to the "to get" lists when ye ole splurge urge hits and/or (in the case of the tv shows) when they're released on DVD.
