I found Salem at a PetSmart about 6 years ago during one of their cat adoption weekends. Walking down the isle of cages I came across the most beautiful cat I had ever seen. I stopped at the cage of a long-haired tortoiseshell named Heather (that changed quickly) and told her how beautiful I thought she was. My heart MELTED when she responded with the most adorable “meow.” I asked her next if she wanted to come home with me … again, she meowed.
The adoption center informed me that she had been tried out 3 times before by potential adopters. Each time she was brought back after about 2 or 3 weeks due to her hiding under beds, dressers, etc. I realized then how patient I would have to be for a while, but that didn’t matter.
The first few weeks I never even saw her at home, I only knew she was alive because each morning I had to refill her water and food bowl, and take out her litter. It took about 6 weeks for her to come out of hiding and close to 4 months for her to let me pet her.
Now though, she is the love of my life. When I come home from work each day she is waiting by the door. She sits on me while I watch TV or kneads her favorite blanket for 30 minutes non-stop, purring the whole time. When I go to bed I can’t even imagine falling asleep without Salem first coming into my bed, laying on my side with her belly exposed, and softly petting her until she gets fed up and settles near the foot of my bed. When I talk to her, she responds with varying degrees of meows, as though we are really communicating. She loves food and is always begging for wet food or treats although her dry food bowl was just restocked that morning.
I totally love my Salem!
