As almost every US airline has begun charging for checked bags, more and more customers are suffering from a lack of overhead space on board. I've gotten very accustomed to using the overhead bin for my roll-aboard and putting my briefcase under the seat in front of me. Then after take off, put it behind my legs. That works very well and is much more considerate.

Although flight attendants make announcements to remind everyone that the overhead compartments are shared space, the problems continue on almost any relatively full to completely packed flight. Interestingly, there seem to be some customers that feel that they hold the deed to all of the carry on space.

Have you ever wondered about the other people on your plane and what makes them do some of the rude things they do?  I did some people watching from my seat on a recent flight from Atlanta to Miami and here are some personality profiles I came across:

  • Mr. Hater: He holds a coach ticket, but walks on and slings his bag in a first class overhead bin and continues back to row 87. A few minutes later a first class passenger has to stow his bag all the way back at row 88.
  • Ms. Hilton: So unfamiliar with commercial travel, she places her multiple crocodile carry-ons overhead so that it covers the most amount of square footage and slides the Yorkie under the seat...then she cries out as others begin to shift her things to the side. Sorry for her that most flight attendants zero in on inconsiderate Paris wannabees with very little mercy.
  • Mrs. Ive Given-birth: She arrives with her tag-along husband and their infant along with 6 carry-ons including a car seat that has bruised the shoulder of each and every customer they've passed. They have more baby items than the law allows, but at least everyone now knows they've given birth.

We can't teach the world, but you can tell them you'd love to forward an interesting article their way.
