frugal first birthday ideas

First birthday parties are very fun and exciting occasions for parents as they celebrate their baby's first year.  Moms and dads want to make this milestone first birthday special and full of memories.

However, the sacrifices of the natural parent often place limits on party planning.  So, what are some frugal first birthday party ideas that can help you throw a great birthday party without breaking the bank?

  • Make your own cake.  That does not mean it has to be boring!  Craft stores, and regular retail stores like Target and Walmart sell decorative cake pans in a variety of shapes and sizes that will make the birthday cake into a work of art!
  • If you are renting a venue or pavilion at a park, ask about the clean up policy.  Often times, if you clean up your area and throw the trash away outside of the park you can get your rental deposit back.
  • Do not bother renting a huge jumping inflatable for your child.  Instead, make your gift to your child a ball pit made out of plastic balls and a simple inflatable pool.  You will save money and have something your baby can play with after the party is over.
  • Schedule the first birthday party at a time between meals.  If your party is during the lunch or dinner hours, guests will expect more than just fingerfood.  Save on the food bill and just plan afternoon snacks.
  • Unless you really have your heart set on a theme, just go for plain colors.  Solid colored paper plates, plasticware, napkins, cups, and tablecloths are cheaper than those that say "happy first birthday" or have a cartoon theme.
