Sometimes, I skip seeing original movies and go straight away to see the sequels. I still have not seen the first Scary Movie, but I have seen Parts two and three. Shame on me.
Sometimes, you miss out on stuff if you do this. I highly recommend seeing the first Night at the Museum before seeing the just released sequel at the cinemas this weekend.
Ben Stiller, playing a likable sort named Larry Daley, gets a job in a big New York City Museum. Three elderly guards, Cecil, Gus and Reginald give Stiller the keys to the museum. Unfortunately for Stiller, they don't tell him that the museum exhibits, including a statue of Teddy Roosevelt played by Robin Williams, come to life during the night. He has a wild first night and is reluctant to return the following evening, but he does. Gradually, he gets caught up in a plot to rob a magic stone from the museum. Stiller turns to the exhibits for help and try to stop the baddies who will remain nameless. You have to see this film to see who they are. Ain't I a stinker?
As stated in the title, this is my personal favorite film from Ben Stiller. His charm exudes every time he is on camera. Can you ever hate this guy? He always seems gullible, but darn likable, even in his worst films.
He is aided every step of the way by a capable supporting cast. Carla Gugino is a charming love interest. Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs as Cecil, Gus and Reginald are always classy. Anna Meara (Stiller's mom) makes a guest appearance in this movie as the employment agent who gets Stiller his job. Brad Garrett memorably performs the voice of an Easter Island statue that always wants bubble gum! Classic.
In this movie however, the special effects are the true stars. Miniatures come to life and the camera work is deft. There are tons of good-natured slapstick scenes; my personal favorite is the slapping match with Ben Stiller and a monkey! Riot!
