Once in a while a piece of technology comes along that is so amazing and unique it takes the nation by storm. That is certainly the case with the iPhone which is available through AT&T. This uber advanced phone is much more then a device to text with or talk on, it is also a technology lovers dream. Beyond the obvious aesthetic appeal, lightning fast internet service and dozens of other cool features, what could really makes this phone stand out among other phones is the selection of apps. The applications for this phone range from the just for fun apps like a wide assortment of games to the must have apps like the navigational app. But being a phone designed by Apple, aka the brains behind the Ipod of course, one would expect the iPhone to also function as a top of the line musical device too. This is definitely the case with both the old model: iPhone 3G and the new version iPhone 3G(S). While the iPhone of course allows the owner to use it like an Ipod and get music directly from Itunes that isn't where the musical fun stops. There are several apps in particular that are a music junkie's dream. The one featured today is: PANDORA RADIO.

Pandora Radio is pretty much like having a personalized radio everywhere the owner goes. This app is very fun, very addicting and also free. The way it works is first the Pandora user types in an artist and it will create a station that plays that artist. But it also will play artists that are similar to the one originally picked. The profiling feature of Pandora is stellar and is definitely a highlight. That is because the additional songs/artists chosen only seem to complement the artist the station was based around. This gives music listeners a chance to expose themselves to new bands or songs too based on what they are already listening to. This brilliant idea came from a project called: The Music Genome Project and was created to give music fans a chance to be in charge of what they hear on the radio. An agreement was reached between the artists played and the creators of Pandora that both promotes the artist and also compensates them too. One way that Pandora promotes the artist is each artist's CD cover is shown thanks to amazon.com and of course if listening on the iPhone then the Itunes store is one click away to buy any must have tune.

But don't worry if sometimes there is a song that is completely not appealing, Pandora radio has thought of a solution for that too. In that case with a simple click of the thumbs down icon the song stops and it will never be played again. Hit thumbs down twice for the same artist and that artist will never play again. By hitting the thumbs up icon then that song will be played quite frequently when the listener goes back to that station. The listener can create up to 100 stations (plus one Quick Mix that blends all stations) an the artist/song selection is very vast and impressive. This is because Pandora's creators didn't just go for mainstream music but also features lesser known artists too. There is the bookmarking feature that lets the station creator bookmark songs and artists as they go along. This is particularly useful when a song or artist comes on that the listener has never heard of but wants to remember in the future. While the entire song cannot be listened to due to copyright issues, listening to the sample does give everyone a chance to keep track of songs that they may want to buy later. Only drawback of Pandora is it only allows 6 skips per station per hour but with the amazing song selection there may not be much of a need to skip. If a no skip limit is important to the listener an upgraded version is available for $36 for a year's subscription. This allows no skip limit with a few other additional perks too. But what really sets listening to music like Pandora Radio on the iPhone apart from the Ipod is the fact that headphones are not required. Much like a regular radio just turn up the volume on the iPhone and the radio or Ipod feature can be listened to sans headphones.

Pandora is a wonderful alternative for those iPhone owners, or music fans in general, who don't have a subscription to Sirius/XM Satellite radio, which really renders the satellite radio app useless. But fear not even if someone doesn't have and iPhone or Pandora friendly phone the radio can still be listened online at: www.pandora.com. That is free too unless someone chooses to get the upgraded version. All that is needed is a valid e-mail address and a flash player installed on the computer. But the cool part of having Pandora on the iPhone is the portability aspect. While many other phones are just as tech savvy and cool this app seems perfect paired with Apple's brilliant creation. But fear not non-AT&T members, Pandora is available for several Sprint phones and select Blackberry phones through Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and other providers too. But if the word of mouth on Pandora keeps spreading it will surely be coming to many more phones soon. But Pandora Radio is one cool application and one amazing radio that allows every person to be a DJ and only hear the music they want to hear. This could be especially amazing news for those who don't have high definition radio or satellite radio and want an alternative to commercial radio. Plus with Pandora there is a free version which in a cash strapped society could bring even more music into the lives of everyone no matter their budget. So much like the mythical figure which the radio is named after, Pandora may be translated to “all-gifted” but it’s the lucky people who use this radio that have received the gift this time.
