Earth Day Fest brings a little music to the environment in DC

If you are looking for something different to do on your Earth Day tomorrow then look no further then the Nation’s Capital where Earth Day Fest, a giant musical celebration is taking place. The Flaming Lips bring their signature brand of trance, psychedelic rock to the Mall in DC tomorrow. Joining Wayne Coyne and company will be Los Lobos, DJ Spooky, moe and the Joy of Motion Dance Center’s teen hip hop company and Urban Impact. Being touted as the largest Earth day celebration in the country the event is being put on by the Green Apple Festival and the event hopes to bring a little environmental awareness along with good music to people across the country.
The show is free and according to Pollstar.com the Earth Day events will focus on “climate change solutions including tree planting, energy efficiency retrofits, water protection, urban gardens and forest restoration.” There will be many events for both adults, children and families taking place throughout the day and the festivities begin at noon. Speakers that are also scheduled to appear along with musicians include:
Lisa Jackson, EPA Administrator • George Hawkins, Director DC Department of Environment • Matthew Modine, Actor and Environmentalist • Gene Karpinski, League of Conservation Voters • Majora Carter, CEO and Founder Sustainable South Bronx • Kathleen Rogers, President Earth Day Network and more
Events like this will be taking place all over the country throughout the weekend in the cities of Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Los Angeles; New York City; San Francisco and Seattle. Artists participating in the volunteer concerts include Galactic, Travis Tritt, Soulive, Cracker, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Cary Brothers, Deep Banana Blackout featuring Fred Wesley, Bassnectar and the Blue Scholars. All artists will also likely be bringing along some special “friends” to each show too for an added surprise. So if you are looking for something to do this Earth Day that is a bit out of the ordinary then head down to DC for a free live show that may bring environmental awareness but also a little musical fun on a Sunday.
