The Itunes free download of the week or as it is offiicially known "single of the week" can really be hit or miss sometimes. But this week they are offering up a free song that is as much a must have as the CD it is from. As was mentioned in an article this past summer, the band Civil Twilight are an up and coming band from South Africa who serve up breathtaking melodies and haunting songs both on their debut CD and at concerts as well. A few weeks back the band was scheduled to make a stop at DC9 but had to postpone the show due to a truly amazing opportunity. They were handpicked to perform at the Itunes Showcase in San Francisco. Obviously the folks at Itunes must have been impressed because the band is getting one of Itunes highest honors by having one of their songs featured as free "single of the week." The song Itunes has chosen by the band is called "Letters From The Sky" and this selection is proof of how talented this trio truly is and how their star is really on the rise and rightfully so.

"Letters From The Sky" starts off slowly and instantly captures the listener's attention with a stripped down sound that highlights lead singer Steven McKellar's unique and gorgeous voice and his profound piano playing ability. But as soon as Steven finishes singing the final words of the opening line "You and I were made for this, I was made to taste your kiss, we were made to never fall away. Never fall away, " suddenly Andrew Mckellar on guitar and Richard Wouters on drums are introduced and the song is transformed into one powerful, mesmerizing masterpiece. With a message of losing someone this song is not sad because it focuses on the belief that those lost will indeed be seen again one day so it is quite hopeful and inspirational. Steven's intense voice is combined with the graceful use of piano and the perfect amount of guitar and drums which are played at the most effective times in the song. It becomes hard to believe that only three people are producing such a powerful and almost orchestral sound. Steven sounds like he is pouring his soul out in every single verse. All the pain, all the loss, all the hope and faith all come though in every single line and inflection in his voice.

There's an unexplainable magic to the song that makes it chill inducing and for anyone who has lost someone they care about this may strike an extra nerve. But the lyrics are the true star of this song with poetic words like:  "cause even though you left me here i have nothing left to fear these are only walls that hold me here hold me here, hold me here."  The song closes with even more poignant words: "One day soon, I'll hold you like the sun holds the moon. And we will hear those planes overhead and we won't have to be scared…" But when Steven so passionately sings the phrase: "You're coming back for me, You're coming back for me. You're coming back to me." in combination with the intensifying use of instruments to close the song it's almost like a dare for anyone who just heard this song not to feel the need to listen to the song repeatedly. The song sticks with you and Civil Twilight perform each note with a striking confidence that makes them sound like seasoned veterans. They also deliver each verse with a passion and beauty that is sorely lacking in most songs today.

This honestly is one of the most breathtaking pieces of music composed in a long while. Now is the perfect chance to discover or rediscover this song too since it doesn't cost a thing. But also check out the video for the song. Much like the band themselves the video for the song features a classic simplicity because the band, their videos and live shows allow the songs to speak for themselves instead of adding unnecessary extras and distractions (Click HERE to view the video). "Letters From The Sky" is one amazing song that is hard to describe but truly needs to be heard to be believed. But don't stop at downloading just "Letter's From The Sky," go check out the bands debut self-titled CD which is available on Itunes too for $5.99 which is a steal of a deal. Songs like "Human," "Next To Me," "Soldier," "Anybody Out There" and the entire CD are equally remarkable. But first go check out the song that closes most Civil Twilight shows and rightfully so because it is a showstopper. Plus one day when this band is inevitably famous "Letters From The Sky" will probably be that one song that every fan demands be played at every show because it really is the song that is a perfect example of why this band is so special.  To download the song if you have Itunes click HERE
