Google PowerMeter prototype being tested

Finally, a gadget to quantify how much money it costs when you leave the lights on in an empty room, leave the desktop computer idling all day or to run the clothes dryer vs. hanging it all out on the line. 

Google PowerMeter will let homeowners see exactly how much energy it takes to do all of this an more.  Google plans to partner with utility companies to offer free PowerMeters to those 40 million Americans already using smart meters to help monitor and program home energy use. 

Users will download the program to their desktops.  Google is currently testing the prototype with no launch date announced to date.  Data security is one issue that is a top priority and Google assures that participating homeowners information is secure and will not be shared between Google and their utility - and that they can cancel service at any time.
