Google took to the streets of NY recently and asked the simple question "what is a browser?" Interesting comments about what the people thought it was. See the rest of the article below the video for an explanation of common internet related terminology.
Common terminology around browsers
If you're unsure what a browser is, this video doesn't help much. A browser is a program that runs on your computer or other electronic device. It allows you to access websites and documents on the World Wide Web. Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari are all browsers. You heard most of these mentioned in this video.
A search engine searches for sites that contain the search phrase you entered. Google and Yahoo! are search engines. Yahoo! can also be viewed as an internet content provider (an ICP, similar to an ISP giving content but not internet service). An ISP or internet service provider is a company that gives you access to the internet.
So now when your friends ask you what a browser is at the next social gathering, you can answer with confidence.
