PC Tip: quickly and easily manage tabs in browsers
If you’re like most people today, you spend a good percentage of your time in browsers. These shortcuts help you manage tabs without using the mouse. And you can keep focused on the task at hand instead of how to manage tabs in browsers.
These shortcuts work the same in IE, Firefox and Chrome. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a browser. You can try the tips as you read them!
Opening and closing tabs
To open a new tab, hit CTRL+T. The focus will be on the new tab.
To close the tab that is in focus, hit CTRL+W or CTRL+F4. Another way to close a tab (even if it’s not the one in focus) is to press the mouse wheel when the mouse is over the tab.
Jumping to a tab
To jump to a tab that is already open, hit CTRL+X where X is a number from 1 to 8. To jump to the last (highest number) tab currently open, hit CTRL+9.
Cycling through tabs
To cycle through all open tabs, hit CTRL+TAB. Keep holding the CTRL key and repeatedly hit TAB. To cycle backwards, hit CTRL+SHIFT+TAB.
Work on these shortcuts until they are committed to memory. Then you can concentrate more on what you’re doing rather than on how to do things in browsers.
There are more than 80 shortcuts in browsers. These are some of the shortcuts available to help you manage tabs.
