How often do you need to click a link but don’t want to move away from your current page? Here are a couple of shortcuts to click a link and open a new tab in one motion. These tips work equally well in Internet Explorer 7.0, Firefox and Google’s Chrome.

Tip #1
Hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys down while clicking the link. This will open a new tab and go to the new site or page. The new tab is in the “foreground,” or is the active tab. Your previous tab will still be there and will stay on the current page. When you are done with the new page, close the new tab and voila, you go back to your previous page.

Since you are in a browser, try this tip now by clicking a link on this article’s page. Then close the tab to come back here.

Tip #2
Hold only the CTRL key down while clicking the link. This will open a new tab and go to the linked site in the “background,” meaning your current tab will stay active. This shortcut is for “I’d like to see this link but not now” type surfing. When you are ready to go to the new page, click the newly created tab.

There are three benefits to shortcuts like these. 1) You save time. 2) You keep your eyes on the screen. 3) You stay focused on the task you are working on.

There are many shortcuts you can use to save time. In fact, browsers have over 80 keyboard shortcuts! Watch for more shortcuts soon.
