Among the recognizable ex-NFL players that were selected in Thursday evening’s inaugural UFL Draft were Adam Archuleta, LaBrandon Toefield, Mike Doss, Jermaine Wiggins and Wendell Bryant.
Wait, you didn’t know there was a UFL Draft on Thursday? You’re not alone as word leaked out earlier Thursday afternoon.
The St. Louis Rams made Archuleta a first-round draft choice in 2001 when he was taken 20th overall. The safety spent five seasons with the Rams and made 69 starts with the club. He was with the Washington Redskins in 2006 and the Chicago Bears in 2007. Archuleta’s career numbers include 531 tackles and four interceptions.
Archuleta, who was drafted by UFL’s Las Vegas team, had a wild 93-yard fumble return during a Monday Night Football game in 2004:
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Toefield in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Jags, but played in fewer and fewer games each year. His best rushing season was his rookie year when he had 212 yards and a 4.0-yard-per-carry average. In 2004, he caught a career high 28 passes for 151 yards. Toefield, who also has experience returning punts and kicks, scored nine touchdowns during his NFL career.
New York’s UFL team hopes to see Toefield run like this:
Mike Doss was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round in 2003. He has played six seasons in the NFL – the first four with the Colts, the last two with the Minnesota Vikings (2007) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2008). The safety had 43 starts during his NFL career and totaled 267 tackles and seven interceptions.
The former Ohio State star was taken by UFL’s Orlando franchise:
Tight end Jermaine Wiggins became a breakout player in 2004 when, seemingly out of nowhere, he caught 71 passes for 705 yards and four touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings. He then added to his totals with 69 more grabs for the Vikings in 2005. Previously, he spent time with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. He played his last NFL game in 2006 with Minnesota and had 14 TDs during his NFL career.
Wiggins, who was drafted by UFL's Orlando team, worked out for the UFL in Orlando:
The Arizona Cardinals selected Wendell Bryant with the 12th overall pick in the 2002 draft. Big things were expected of the large defensive tackle from Wisconsin, but off-the-field issues derailed his career. Bryant started nine games for the Cards in his three seasons in the NFL and the UFL’s Las Vegas team gives him a second chance to play pro football.
There is a Super Bowl this Sunday, right? Maybe both teams have too many classy players to cause any unnecessary excitement this week, but Super Bowl …
