A few new rules -- and adjustments to some old ones -- have been added to the NFL for the 2008 season. One of them, however, doesn't seem to make much sense.
The forceout is now gone, meaning any receiver must land with two feet inbounds for the catch to count. If a receiver goes up for a ball and would have landed inbounds, but a defensive player shoves the receiver out of bounds before he can come down with both feet inbounds, it's an incomplete pass.
So, if you play defense, and a wide out goes up to make a catch near the sideline, wouldn't you just shove him out of bounds as soon as the ball reaches him?
The rule may provide clarity for those plays that were too hard to tell if the player really would've landed inbounds, but it takes away from some would-be amazing sideline grabs that won't count in '08.
Curious about the new rules, including the coin toss decision, the face mask and the four-point play? OK, OK, so there's no four-point play, but you can check out the new rules right here.
