For all you shell collectors in SW Florida: don't just put your shells in a jar or a bowl somewhere. Shells can be used to decorate photo frames and given away as gifts.
The abundance and quality of shells that can be found on Sanibel Island is legendary. Start collecting shells now with this project in mind:
Step 1: collect various shapes and sizes of shells as well as similar shaped shells to make the flowers on this shell frame (see photo). Gather sand in a gallon sized plastic baggie to use for sprinkling on frame.
Step 2: purchase hot glue sticks, beige spray paint, 4 x 6 inch flat frames and a small bag of faux pearls at your local craft store for approximately $15.00. This will be enough to make at least three or four frames.
Step 3: Lay out frames on newspaper outside and sprinkle sand lightly and evenly over each frame's surface. Spray paint over sand, covering well. Let dry for a half hour and spray once more. Let paint dry for several hours before adding shells and pearls. Use as many shells for the decorating as you like but do leave a little space in between shells so you can see the sandy background.
Step 4: Lay out shell designs before gluing them onto the frame. Glue shells and pearls on with hot glue gun and let dry flat undisturbed overnight.
These frames are so much fun to make and turn out differently every time. They are a beautiful reminder of family vacations, summer days at the beach and should last many years if handled gently.
