In Don Bluth's classic The Land Before Time, children are presented with yet another a strong single mom character. Littlefoot's mom, one of the only remaining members of her herd, takes the lead in the quest for survival. In her short film existence, she instills faith, determination, humanity and leadership in her son Littefoot. Like all single moms, she takes on the role of explaining the hard questions without the help of another parent.
The above scene depicts the maternal instinct all mothers have to protect, but for a single parent, the pure fact of knowing that you are all that your child has...creates an even more desperate situation. If you haven't seen this 1988 children's film, I strongly recommend watching it with your child. It tackles serious issues such as mortality, survival, prejudice, teamwork, pride and vindication.
