Maggie Gyllenhaal portrays single mom "Sherry" in a story about a woman trying to recover from her past mistakes and reclaim her motherhood and life. This film, painful and amazing in its realism, forces audiences to look at a less-than perfect human being, who is also trying to remember what its like to be a productive member of society, let alone take on the incredibly hard task of being a single mother.
Sherry isn't a likable character, but this film is a stark, honest depiction of how even basic behavior and the lowest expectations are sometimes impossible for a person in recovery to live up to. Sherry fall victim to self-destruction, temptation, inner demons, personal hell and past trauma.
It reminds us that single motherhood isn't always the fairy tale Hollywood portrays it to be. Be prepared for volatile emotional reaction to this movie, but try to view it with an open mind. How would you cope with Sherry's life?
