Fried Green Tomatoes has been a beloved chick flick since its release in 1991. A rerun staple on almost every television channel, network and cable alike, this girl power movie of love, loss and sisterhood continuously charms women of every generation. Also a favorite at Gay & Lesbian film festivals, this movie has hinted at becoming a classic in its subtle feminist genre.
Mary Louise Parker, who may only be familiar to the youngest troop of neo-feminists through her depiction of a pot-selling single mother in the Showtime series Weeds, claims Fried Green Tomatoes as one of her most memorable roles. Parker plays Ruth Jamison, best friend, business partner, good Christian and single mother in the film. An escapee of domestic violence, and a failed marriage, she struggles with being a respected, God-Fearing woman in the deep south, during a time when this feat was seemingly impossible.
