To celebrate what would have been beloved children's author Richard Scarry's 90th birthday (on June 5, 2009), Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., is organizing "A Very Scarry Summer" for children, parents, teachers, librarians, and Richard Scarry fans everywhere.

For 90 days during June, July, and August, participants can visit Sterling Children's Books online to read about Richard Scarry's work and life and to download a kit full of fun games and activities. Adults who qualify can enter a Richard Scarry sweepstakes contest for a chance to win 8 Richard Scarry books.

About Richard Scarry

Funny and intelligent, Richard Scarry saw himself as both an entertainer and an educator. The pages of his children's picture books are crammed full of busy pictures, labels, and explanations over which young prereaders and readers can spend hours poring while laughing and learning about the world.

Free Richard Scarry Activity Kit

Children can participate in the summer celebration of Richard Scarry’s birthday by downloading the free Richard Scarry Activity Kit available at Sterling Children’s Books. This Story Time Event Kit and Birthday Party includes event suggestions for how to celebrate and reproducible activity sheets, such as coloring pages and full-color mazes and matching activities starring charming Richard Scarry characters.

Summer of Scarry Memory Sweepstakes

School employees, librarians, and booksellers are invited to participate in the Summer of Scarry Memory Sweepstakes. Interested parties can download a full set of rules from Sterling Children’s Books. Twelve winners will be randomly drawn and receive copies of eight of the Richard Scarry books currently being published by Sterling Children’s Books, including the fantastic Richard Scarry's The Great Pie Robbery and Other Mysteries.

Librarians and booksellers are also invited to e-mail sterlingkids@sterlingpublishing.com to share their favorite Richard Scarry-related memories. Participants might share thoughts about a favorite Richard Scarry book, character, or event. Many of these memories will be posted on the Web site for all visitors to read and enjoy.
