Nombe:  The Mission's new izakaya eatery was a work in progress last Friday

Treat yourself to some special cocktails tonight at Beretta.  John Deragon of New York's PDT will guest bartend from 8:00 p.m. until midnight.  He will mix five signature drinks including the Solstice, Newark, Witch's Kiss and French Maid for ten bucks a pop (they are usually $13 at PDT).  1199 Valencia Street.  415.695.1199.

Chefs Mari Takahashi (Sozai) and Nick Balla (O Izakaya) are gearing up for their new Mission District project, Nombe, which as of last week, is still on target to open on November 18th for dinner, starting at 6:00 p.m.  The nearly 90-seat eatery serving izakaya style fare will be open until 2:00 a.m. on weekends, serving a limited menu beginning at 11:00 p.m. Look for Japanese street/festival food to go - think takoyaki, karaage, okonomiyaki - as well as weekend brunch down the road.  Gil Payne, Takahashi's husband, is a sake sommelier and is ensuring that the mind-boggling array of wonderful sake they served at Sozai will be available at Nombe - 70 different kinds - along with a variety of local micro-brewed and draft beers, Japanese bottled beers and California wines.  After all, "nombe" is Japanese slang for someone who likes to drink.  The Mission Street digs will have communal tables in front, a handful of tall two-tops, and a 48 seat main dining room.  Sadly, it's lights out for beloved Sozai after Wednesday, November 11, so be sure to run over and raise a glass to Mari and Gil.  Check back here for more details on Nombe soon.  2491 Mission Street near 21st.

To celebrate the opening of crab season, Nick’s Cove & Cottages in Marin is holding a Crab Feed on its back deck on Thursday, November 19, all day.  You will find fresh crab three ways, each $26 with all the fixings:  Grilled with rosemary butter and lemony roasted rapini; steamed with melted butter and hoppin' john (black eyed peas and rice); and chilled with Nick's coleslaw and Louis dressing.  There will be a Surf and Turf option with grilled crab and skirt steak for $29.  Lagunitas beers and Anchor Steam will be $3.  23240 Highway 1, Marshall, CA.  415.663.1033.

Word is that eVE (not to be confused with Eve Lounge in SF) will be a 28-seat Berkeley eatery from husband and wife team Christopher Laramie (executive chef) and Veronica Laramie (pastry chef) who plan to open before the month is up.  The Le Cordon Bleu Paris graduates have created a New American menu that will be "micro-seasonal and locally sourced."  Main courses will include:  quail with pancetta, chestnuts and star anise; seared black cod with miso, carrots and almonds; and corned Wagyu beef with rye bread, sauerkraut and mustard.  The menu is available in a prix fixed format only wherin three courses are  $33, five for $55, and seven for $77.  1960 University Avenue, Berkeley, CA.

The folks who own Burma Superstar and B Star Bar have taken over the Eats space on Clement and will reopen in a couple of weeks.  They will offer their Pan Asian take on breakfast.  Best wishes to the nice couple who previously owned Eats  - the kids thank you for all those fluffy pancakes and lollipops over the years!  By the way, B Star serves a pretty mean brunch that is relatively inexpensive, full of fresh flavors, nicely presented, and served in a familial atmosphere.  Tip:  If one has had to much to drink the night before, the Duck Hash ($10) with fingerling potatoes, red bell peppers, shallots, poached eggs and whole wheat toast really hits the spot.  Smother their Pork Tocino with Garlic Fried Rice (grilled jerk pork, tomatoes, sunny side up eggs, and scallions) with hot sauce and you've got another satisfying hangover remedy. B Star is located at 127 Clement between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.  415. 933.9900.  Burma Superstar is located at 309 Clement between 4th and 5th Avenues.  415.387.2147.  Eats is located at 50 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue.

Taverna Aventine has a new lunch and bar menu that includes a lengthy list of starters such as:  Prosciutto and Parmesan Soup ($9) with fresh cannellini beans, broccoli rabe and red bell peppers; Burrata ($12) with rocket arugula, shaved fennel, toy box tomatoes, and balsamic fig sauce; and Lamb and Meatball Sliders ($9) with tomato relish and chimi churi sauce.   An assortment of salads and sandwiches fill out the menu.  582 Washington Street.  415.981.1500.

1300 on Fillmore chef/owner David Lawrence and his wife Monetta now have Gospel Brunch on Sundays.  For $39/person, enjoy a three-course meal, a mimosa or bellini, and live gospel music.  There are two seatings, 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  1300 Fillmore between Eddy and Ellis.  415.771.7100.
