The effort to change the state's name is moving out of the General Assembly and into the ballot box, as the issue will now be put up to a public vote.
The measure proposes dropping "Providence Plantations" from the title of the state. The states full, lengthy name is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."
The reference to plantations is offensive to some due to its slave era connotations, while some historians claim the word "plantations" refers to early colonial settlements in the state rather than farms. Either way, most never say the full name.
Rhode Islanders get to vote on whether or not to approve the terse title during the 2010 elections.
