The city of Alexandria received the 2009 Virginia Sustainable Building Network’s (VSBN) Green Innovation Award for Most Sustainable Community Project on July 2nd.  This award recognizes the city’s Eco-City Alexandria Initiative efforts toward creating a more environmentally sustainable community.

The Eco-City Alexandria Initiative is a collaborative effort by the city of Alexandria, the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s Department of Urban Affairs & Planning. The initiative aims to guide Alexandria toward a more sustainable environmental future by prioritizing energy conservation, green building practices, environmental protection, and recycling efforts. Specific Eco-City Alexandria achievements include the development of a “Green-Ventory”; a Compendium of Sustainability Model Practices; an Eco-City Environmental Charter created and approved by a local jurisdiction; and the development of an Environmental Action Plan.

Each year, VSBN nominates green businesses, organizations, design firms, and community programs that present the best green projects or programs in Virginia.

The criteria for the awards are: 1) environmentally responsible products, projects, and programs; 2) emphasis on energy efficiency and renewable energy use; 3) completed projects and on-going programs; and 4) promotion of Green Building and Sustainable Development principles in the local community.
