On March 3rd, Stephen Colbert enlisted the Colbert Nation to go to NASA's website and enter his name for their node-naming contest. Not just that; Colbert Nation members had to keep voting for his name so he could win.
And on March 21st, the votes were tallied and Stephen came out on top - by quite a wide margin.
"COLBERT" beat out the leader of NASA's own suggestions, SERENITY, by 40,000 votes.
The final tally: COLBERT - 230,539. SERENITY - 190,196.
The Colbert Nation couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome, but celebrations haven't begun yet, as they have yet to hear from NASA.
NASA informed everyone about a week before the contest ended that they had the right to reject whatever name was voted-in - even if the write-in won the contest. They have promised to give strong consideration to the leading names, however, so members of the Colbert Nation are waiting with baited breath in the hopes that NASA will hold true to the contest and honor the winner.
This is one of many things to be named after the fakenews pundit, including a bridge in Hungary, a Ben&Jerry's ice cream flavor, and a Michigan hockey team.
