Héctor "El Father"

Sad news for reggaeton fans.

In a bold move that has left reggaeton fans shocked, one of the genre’s major players has thrown in the towel.

According to a report published in Batanga.com earlier this week, Héctor Delgado, better known as Héctor “El Father,” announced he’ll quit the music world after closing several recording industry deals in the following months.

The 29-year-old interpreter of “Maldades” said that after releasing his upcoming new album and wrapping up its subsequent international concert tour he will step down as one of reggaeton’s most acclaimed ambassadors in order to follow Christ’s will.

“My calling is God’s will,” he said during a recent press conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The born-again Christian explained that he opted to exchange a life of fame and fortune for a life serving God after having been personally involved in a shoot-out in February that was allegedly sparked by his refusal to sign an autograph for a young female fan.

“On that day, the Devil almost made me fall into a trap, but God guided me to the light thanks to his mercy…I kneeled and I asked God for his forgiveness, and so he healed my soul.”

The artist’s new release, “Juicio Final,” will hit the market in October, and it will feature collaborations by the legendary Puerto Rican rapper Vico C, on the track “Mendigo,” Cosculluela on “Entre el bien y el mal,” and minister Harry Maldonado on “Si me tocarás.”

As many of you might know, this is not the first time that a Latino artist calls it quits or puts a screeching halt to his or her career to follow the Christian faith. In the past two decades, several well-known figures have followed in El Father’s footsteps, including salsa greats Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, tropical music singer Domingo Quiñones and rapper Vico C, among others.

What a pity for El Father’s cult following. But I guess it’s better for him to retire at the top of his game rather than when his popularity has waned. Good luck Hector!
