Café Tacvba

Viva Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Puerto Rico!

Mexican alt-rock group Café Tacvba led the list of Latin Grammy contenders, grabbing six nominations for its album “Sino,” the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences announced on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The band's' nominations include album of the year, record of the year, best alternative song for “Volver a comenzar,” and song of the year and best rock song for “Esta vez.”

Argentinean Gustavo Santaolalla, an Oscar-winning composer and record producer, and Juanes, one of Colombia’s best-selling artists, picked up five nods each.

The Mexican rockers are battling it out in several categories against Juanes, whose nominations include album of the year for his multi-platinum set “La Vida….. Es Un Ratico,” and record and song of the year for “Me enamora.”

Puerto Rican singer Kany García, one of the most well-known newcomers to emerge in the past year, walked away with four nominations for album of the year and best female pop vocal album for her 2007 debut "Cualquier Dia", along with best new artists and song of the year for "Hoy Ya Me Voy.”

Another boricua Olga Tañón, one of the hottest merengueras of all time, grabbed a nod for best contemporary tropical music album for "Exitos en Dos Tiempos." Tañón, who's currently touring Latin America, will release her new album "Fuego En Vivo" in October.

Latin pop and tropical music singer Gloria Estefan was honored as Latin Grammy artist of 2008 and was also among the performers earning three nominations.

Like every year, the awards ceremony brings together well-known performers and the best up-and-coming Latin music acts in the industry, and this year is no exception. The most interesting battle this year, however, will no doubt be that of Café Tacvba and Juanes, for both are brilliant established artists loved by fans everywhere. We’ll see.

The 9th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on the Univision Network (8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central) from the Toyota Center in Houston on Nov. 13. For more information, please visit www.latingrammy.univision.com.
