I have followed Beto Cuevas’ career since he burst onto the international music scene as the frontman of the Chilean alt-rock band La Ley in the ‘90s.
Since then, he has built a healthy fan base across the globe, garnered multiple accolades and won several Grammy awards.
Not bad. Undoubtedly, the band’s mix of U2-esque guitar riffs blended with electro- acoustic pop rock and meaningful lyrics has paid off.
Today, though, things are different.
Following a two-year hiatus, Cuevas is now out with “Vuelvo,” the first cut from his upcoming debut album as a soloist, “Miedo escénico,” due out in mid September.
Here’s the thing: Even with a new band, Cuevas’ new single sounds pretty much the same as his old stuff – bummer.
Aside from some catchy electro-pop thrown in, its vibe resembles La Ley’s hit “Delirando,” with the same synth-driven beat and grungy voice.
Although die-hard fans will love it, those expecting Cuevas to have explored other musical currents will be disappointed as I am.
But who knows? Maybe the rest of the album is something like Ravi Shankar meets Santana. Yeah, right...
