You don't have to look too hard to stumble across art in the Lower Haight - with dedicated galleries like FIFTY24SF, street murals and monthly shows at both Lower Haters and D-Structure there's plenty to see. But next month businesses and artists in the neighborhood are joining forces to showcase talents in the first Lower Haight Art Walk.
Friday August 7, 2009, the streets will be filled with art-related activities while the galleries and other stores stay open late to encourage residents to steep in the creativity and enjoy local food and music.
What can you expect to find? Live painting, music and dancing will be erupting all along the Haight Street corridor, from Pierce to Webster streets.
Local artists Romanowski, P-nut and Andrew Perry will be setting up wood panels in the street for a collaborative creation session, while Groove Merchant Records' very own Cool Chris will be spinning vinyl for your listening pleasure in a late session at Lower Haters.
The word is that Idle Handle Tattoo Studio will be making their more visible by tattooing in their front window, and getting into the spirit of things by parading around in circus-themed costumes.
Bars and restaurants will also be offering special discounts when you show your Lower Haight pride and flash the art walk flyer:
At Bistro St. Germain the flyer will score you a free order of fries with your meal; Memphis Minnies and RNM will both have discounts; Danny Coyle's is having drink specials; and Three Twins Ice Cream will be offering a free topping with purchase of a cone or cup.
Inspired by art events hosted by nearby communities, such as Hayes Valley and the Divisadero corridor of NoPa, Elizabeth Everhard of the Lower Haight Merchants and Neighbors Association and Janice Myint and Rob Albright of Lower Haters Gallery, and Dick Vivian and have been organizing the event.
Over 25 businesses have already committed to the event, and the local art community has been abuzz since last week's opening reception at Lower Haters when Albright and Myint were able to spread the word.
"I'm excited to see what everybody does and how it turns out," Albright said. "We think with the response we're getting so far from this one, that the next one is going to get even better."
