In his solo show “Dead Works” opening tonight at D-Structure, Ian Hill presents his latest iteration in a progression of illustration-based works.
Hill’s canvases depict curious scenes, where fragments of reality tether imaginary creatures to unfamiliar landscapes that challenge the viewer to make sense of these dreamlike juxtapositions.
Describing his style as “an art milkshake of old America, pop-culture and psychedelics,” Hill combines imagery from old photographs, toys and folk patterns.
A pinch of mystery and a hint of wonder produce the “ambiguous narrative quality that the viewer can experience psychologically.”
His influence by Normal Rockwell comes across directly, but Hill adds that he is inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, Carvaggio, and contemporaries Mike Davis and Eric White.
The RSVP-only show opens tonight at 8 p.m., followed by an after party at Nickies at 11 p.m.
