Have you ever wished you could take the best aspects of everything in your life and create the "perfect" job?  This seems to resonate with many people these days, whether they are job hunters looking to find their dream job, or a long-time employees that need to be challenged or at least have a change of pace in their routine.

As I was sitting in a seminar last month, I found myself creating a "dream list" of all the various tasks and skills I really love to do - and then sighing as I wished such a combination existed.  And it very well may be out there - I just haven't found it yet!

Then to almost underscore this concept, I stumbled upon a blog post by Pam Slim, author and certified master coach.  It almost knocked me off my seat when I read the title - "Are you ingredients looking for a recipe?"  And it didn't catch my eye just because I'm a personal chef!

Slim wrote an insightful blog post I wish I would have written (add that to my dream list!), with great analogies and examples.  A short excerpt:

"I spend a lot of my time working with people who are trying to figure out what to do for a living...they say 'I sure love all these things, but how in the world can I make a business out of them?'  To which I reply: You are ingredients in search of a recipe.

A common misperception...is that you have to fit all your interests into one neatly tied up and integrated business which will allow you to follow all of your passions.  Instead, I like to think of skills and interests as ingredients to use selectively in different business models, depending on the opportunities and market...you don't have to use all the ingredients at once, in the same measure, in the same recipe. All you need to do is continually refine your list of ingredients and combine them in ways that interest you and taste great."

Brilliant!  You take a dash of this, a cup of that, a heaping tablespoon of everything else and voila - you have a concoction that not only inspires you but tastes great too. (Wonder if it could possibly be low-fat? But I digress...)

A local colleague works in a similar realm of using your dreams and thoughts to create the reality you want, both in the workplace and life in general.  Author, speaker and dream leader Melissa Wadsworth  hosts events called "Dinner and a Dream Board"  that helps take the things you notice and channels them into an artistic format - oh yes, you get dinner too (keeping our food theme alive!).  It's a great process that helps you create a dream board that shows you how to picture your desires with more clarity, focus and success.  Her next event in Bellevue is June 16; details below.

And back to my new favorite "food writer" Pam Slim, I did a little more searching and found that she'll be in Seattle July 10 to do a workshop on how to "Escape From Cubicle Nation", which is also the title of her recently published book.  This would be a great opportunity for those that are stuck in their current circumstances and looking for some inspiration on how to build a dream life plan.  Or if you need a few recipes to help you figure out what to do with those "ingredients" you've got sitting on your shelf!

And I want to close with the final note from Slim's blog post, and ask you to really give this some thought -- "What is your list of ingredients?"  What interests you, what are you passionate about, what could you do all day long even if you didn't get paid? Post your comments below and let's chat about it!

For more info: You can get more info on Pam Slim's July 10 event in Seattle here and Melissa Wadsworth's June 16 event here. And in a completely random, yet remotely connected note, a great summer read is "The School of Essential Ingredients" by Erica Bauermeister.  Not only is it a wonderful cooking-themed novel, it addresses these same questions of "what are the essential ingredients of life?"  It's a must-read!
