In 2002 Bacardi launched a new line of flavored rum to keep up with the flavored vodka trend. In 2003, to introduce their new line of flavors Bacardi sponsored high end parties all over the world where Bacardi was the only liquor served. (I know this because one star studded gala was held at the trendy LA hotel I was working at.) To confuse matters even further none of the traditional rum beverages would be served such as Rum and Cokes, Daiquiris, Mojitos and Caipirinhas. Instead, party guests were introduced to a bountiful menu of drinks; many of them vodka based such as Cosmopolitans, Lemon Drops, Key Lime, Chocolate martinis as well as single mixer cocktails…but without the vodka.

The consensus was that cocktails made with flavored rum like the Cosmos with Bacardi O, Lemon Drops with Bacardi Limon and Chocolate martinis with Bacardi Vanilla were smoother and more flavorful, almost dangerously so. Bacardi’s point: whatever vodka can do Bacardi rum can do better. And better indeed. Since releasing their line of flavored rum Bacardi has established itself as one of the leading rum distilleries in the word; selling in excess of 200 million bottles per year in 100 countries and sales reaching $5.5 billion USD in 2007.

Bacardi’s flavors include Coconut, Raspberry, Vanilla, Limon, Orange, Apple, Grand Melon, Peach Red and their newest flavor released earlier this year Dragon Berry; strawberry infused rum with a hint of dragon fruit.  For the die hard vodka soda drinker it may take a conscious effort to bend your tongue to ask for a Dragon Fruit and soda or a Bacardi Razz (Raspberry) and tonic but I assure you it’s worth the effort. Or if you’re still not convinced and not willing to make a full leap from rum to vodka at least try one of the flavors in a Mojito or try a Grand Melon Caipirinha.

Grand Melon Caipirinha

1 ½ oz Bacardi Grand Melon
3 lime wedges
Bar spoon or 1 packet of sugar

Muddle the sugar and lime wedges in the glass. Add ice and rum and shake well. Garnish with a small wedge of watermelon, mint leaves or a lime wedge.

Raspberry Mojito

1 ½ Bacardi Razz (or any Bacardi flavored rum)
12 mint leaves
2 oz club soda
2 lime wedges
4 raspberries
Bar spoon or 1 packet of sugar

Muddle mint, raspberries (or complimentary fruit) sugar and lime wedges in the glass. Add ice and rum and shake well. Add club soda and stir with a straw or bar spoon. Garnish with mint leaves, lime or any complimentary fruit.

Bat Bite

1 ½ oz Bacardi rum
½ oz raspberry liqueur like Chambord or Dekuyper’s Razzmatazz
2 oz cranberry juice

Pour all ingredients into a collins/highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.
